Searching for the Ghost of the Mountains · Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh
High altitude. Extreme landscapes. Long hours of scanning. And the possibility of seeing one of the world’s most elusive cats. Spend ten unforgettable days in Spiti following the snow leopard ecosystem — from snow-clad peaks and prey species like blue sheep to the warmth of mountain homestays.
Referred to by naturalists as the "Grey Ghost of the Himalayas," the Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) thrives in the cold, forbidding crags of the Trans-Himalayas. In late winter, heavy snow drives Himalayan Ibex and Blue Sheep down to lower valleys, drawing snow leopards within reach of patient spotting scopes in the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. Under Pushpendra’s veteran leadership alongside indigenous Spitian trackers, this expedition balances relentless field patience with comprehensive acclimatization, heated homestays, and medical oxygen safety.
Arrive in Shimla (2,200m) from Chandigarh/Delhi. Check in at our hotel, meet Pushpendra and the expedition team for a detailed briefing on extreme cold preparedness, photography battery conservation, and high-altitude hydration. Overnight in Shimla.
Scenic drive through Kinnaur along the dramatic Sutlej River gorge. Ascend to Kalpa (2,960m) offering majestic sunset panoramas of the sacred Kinner Kailash peak. Acclimatization walk in the apple orchards.
Cross into the cold desert of Spiti through the confluence of Spiti and Sutlej rivers. Visit the ancient 10th-century Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage gem. Arrive at Kaza (3,800m) for overnight rest and body adaptation.
Short, scenic drive to Kibber village (4,200m), our field base for the snow leopard quest. Check into our traditional, heated homestay. Meet the local spotters and test spotting scopes on surrounding cliffs. Rest and hydrate to complete acclimatization.
Each morning at sunrise, our tracker network fans out across Rongmotsang, Chicham, and Kee valleys. We deploy spotting scopes onto ridgelines, tracking pugmarks and following alarm calls of Himalayan Ibex and Blue Sheep. Hot meals and tea are served directly in the field. When a cat is located, we approach ethically to establish steady telephoto angles. Expect sightings of Red Fox, Tibetan Wolf, and Himalayan Griffons.
Bid an emotional farewell to our Kibber host family and spotters. Descend through the Spiti valley back to Kalpa (2,960m), feeling the immediate relief of thicker oxygen. Celebratory dinner and review of expedition captures.
Early morning departure driving down from Kinnaur to Chandigarh Airport/Railway Station for evening return connections, concluding an epic Trans-Himalayan expedition.
